Ashra Karnataka..

The Department of Food, Civil Supplies & Consumer Affairs, Government of Karnataka enforces The Essential Commodities Act 1955 and various Control Orders issued thereunder to ensure proper control of the supply and distribution of, and trade and commerce in, certain commodities. The Department also administers the Targeted Public Distribution System which is an important constituent of the strategy for food security to the population Below Poverty Line.

At the District level, the Deputy Directors of Food, Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs work under the control of the Deputy Commissioners of the districts. At the Taluk level, functions relating to Food, Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs are carried out by the Tahsildars of the taluks with the assistance of Food Shirestedars & Food Inspectors of the department. 50 cities with a population of 40,000 and above have been notified as Informal Rationing Areas. Out of these, 12 Informal Rationing Areas are managed by the independent Rationing Officers. Bangalore Informal Rationing Area which is divided into five ranges, is managed by the Additional Director with the assistance of the following Deputy Directors.
