friday faves: 7.15.11 - a personal post

first of all, this is what i have been dealing with all week . . .
 
in case you can't tell from the picture, that is a massive tree, snapped in half, next to my house.  it's technically my neighbor's tree, and she is unfortunately dealing with the majority of the consequences, but that is not to say that we aren't as well.  the clean-up crew has yet to arrive so the tree just continues to break and fall and is now half in our yard.  debris is everywhere from the crazy storm that hit chicagoland monday, but i didn't expect it to hit so close to home.  people drive by and just stare - i smile and wave.  because really, what can we do?!  of course, we have been without cable, phone, internet, and since yesterday - now electricity of all forms.  not such a great week.  so please forgive me that this week's friday faves has to be canceled.  i just haven't had time, not just because of the power/internet outage, but also because of some HUGE changes going on in my life right now... more of that to come!

i'll leave you with my greatest "fave" of the week - a truly inspirational speech given by steve jobs at stanford in 2005 ::

 
this video was sent to me by a friend who said it truly captured what i am going through right now.  and wow was he right... without getting into great detail, a friend of mine died in a very tragic and public way last week.  although we had not been close in the past year (since i got my all-consuming job and had to move out of the city and pretty much give up my social life), it still affected me.  realizing that it could have been any of us, realizing how many dreams he had that will now never happen, realizing the pain his friends are going through... realizing a lot.  and rethinking a lot of my own personal decisions.  
then i was sent this video.  and i listened to this incredibly successful and creative man say :

"i have looked in the mirror every morning and asked myself: 'if today were the last day of my life, would i want to do what i am about to do today?' and whenever the answer has been no for too many days in a row, i know i need to change something.  remembering that i'll be dead soon is the most important tool i've ever encountered to help me make the big choices in life.  because almost everything, all external expectations, all pride, all fear of embarrassment or failure, these things all just fall away in the face of death, leaving only what is truly important.  remembering that you are going to die is the best i way i know to avoid the trap of thinking you have something to lose.  you are already naked, there is no reason not to follow your heart."

i was wow-ed.  and then i took some steps towards following my heart.

etc.: yes i do listen to ben harper

guess i'm still in the father's day mood because i really can't help but reblog this incredible flow chart!  music has been a constant love throughout my life and i owe pretty much all of that to my father.  his love of pretty much every genre of music (but mostly classic rock) was passed on to me, and although i'll never understand ke$ha or justin beiber, i love that i was the middle schooler with music by nirvana, bob marley, and the clash all proudly displayed in my room.  maybe it wasn't "cool" at the time, but i thankfully missed out on some absolutely terrible pop music.  thank you daddy :)

but i digress...back to the flow chart!  now i couldn't get it to show up here large enough for anyone to read it without a microscope, so i encourage you to go over to the sonos blog HERE to check it out, find the result, then come back here & let me know if it was accurate!  a lot of work for a monday, i know - but seriously, you should do it :)

side note #2: once out with some friends, my country-lovin' date [different man] let me pick a song on the jukebox, knowing it would likely be something he'd hate.  i chose "steal my kisses" by ben haper.  he laughed because as suspected, he does not like that song, but then he danced with me, right there in a sports bar certainly not known for dancing.  tres romantique.  well, for me -- little things like that are my idea of romance.

side note #3: now that i think of it, i have known some pretty sweet men :)

a personal post: me & my daddy

in honor of father's day i decided to write a post dedicated to him and to our interesting relationship.  so here is a sort of time line of me & my daddy ::

yes, you read that right - toad.  my father didn't call me his princess or his angel or anything like that.  i was his toad.  why?  well now, that's the best part!  i was toad because i looked like a toad.  sweet.  above is a picture of my very young daddy and his baby toad.  
from the start i was a total daddy's girl...
we were best friends.

it's not that there are no pictures of daddy & me during this time frame, it's just that i don't have any on my computer right now.  i would probably have to search for one of just the two of us as i don't think we took many pictures together during my prolonged angsty stage.  unfortunately, we didn't have the best of relationships at this time.  it would take a long time to explain why exactly but in short - he did nothing wrong, he loved me and always had my best interests at heart, but for whatever reason i couldn't see that.  i became much closer with my momma and didn't pay as much attention to my dad.  i was quite the sensitive pre-adolescent/adolescent and his tough personality offended me [but i repeat: he only loved me and only had my best interests at heart.  it's just taken me a few years to realize that].  i wish we didn't have this lapse in our relationship but i'm glad to say that moody phase is finally over!

when i went away to college, my parents' alma mater actually, i constantly heard from my father's friends that i had become just like him.  at first i was really shocked but then the more i thought about it, the more i realized they were right.  everyone had always said i was like my mother's twin but i now knew i was far more like my dad's sarcastic, outgoing, confident, occasionally reckless self.  i realized i inherited so much more from him than a love of eclectic music - i also could hold my own with pretty much anyone, get along with pretty much anyone, and refuse to let any of those people bring me down.
the other night at dinner with my family, my mom asked me & my two younger siblings, "who is most like dad?"
the answer was unanimously, kait.

i couldn't be happier.

 p.s.  i was also decided to be most like my mom. 
it's common knowledge that i am the perfect mix of my parents.
just when i thought i couldn't get any happier . . . i am.

a personal post: mothers day 2k11

first of all, happy mother's day to all you beautiful mommas out there!  i have made it pretty clear before that i absolutely revere my own mother and i also long to one day join this exclusive club of women, so this is a day i do not take lightly.  i wish i could say i spent all day with my own madre, pampering her and pretty much doing whatever she wants; alas, it's the weekend so instead i worked all day.  but that's fine - my gift to her this year was to have a momma/daughter day sometime soon when i am actually not working.  she had purchased us spa vouchers at some crazy promotional price and i got her a gift certificate to white house black market which happens to be virtually next to the spa.  why white house black market, you ask?  let me tell you a little story...

back in december i was going through quite a lot: mostly, preparing for my store to open and my professional life to begin full-force, moving out of a fun apartment with friends in wicker park and into my childhood bedroom with my family in the suburbs (due to the job change - the commute was just too much with my crazy hours), and having my college best friend admitted to a mental health institution nearby.  whew.  that's stressful just remembering...

but anyways, i had to go shopping for an entire new wardrobe to fit my new professional life.  i had nice clothes, sure, but now i needed really nice clothes - all tailored, all quality, all black.  it was one week before the store opened and i realized that i had created a dress code for my employees that i could not comply to myself -- business professional, all black, optional 10% color; no sleeveless, no bare legs, no cleavage or midriff (although those last three were no issue for me).  so i went on over to white house black market, prepared to drop quite a bit of money buying quite a bit of clothing.  there's one right on the way to the hospital where my best friend had just been admitted so my plan was to shop first to get my spirits up and prepare me to see her in what i knew would be a difficult state.  the problem was, i went in jeans and a hoodie.  and with a generic brand purse.  and i look 12.  no one in the store took me seriously.  no one gave me any attention.  i had absolutely no idea what size i was, no idea how to shop for suits, and no one helping me.  near tears, i texted my mom "s.o.s." in the fitting room.  i guess she was at home, eating popcorn in her sweats and grading papers.  but she got my text and jumped in the car and was there a half hour later. 

my magical mother took the situation from bad to beautiful.

she helped find me incredible clothes, she made me speak up and ask for help from the consultants, and she most importantly soothed my anxiety over seeing my friend in the hospital.  we finished shopping early but she didn't leave me quite yet, as she knew i would just stress and stress and stress until visiting hours at the hospital had started.  so instead of letting me ruminate, she took me "dream shopping."  we went to pottery barn, williams-sonoma, and most importantly - crate + barrel .  we built my dream apartment and took home fabric swatches and catalogs and all-in-all had a good time.

she saved my day.

she made me strong enough to go see my friend as the rock of support i needed to be, instead of the ball of anxiety i would have been.  that's what my mom has always done in my life - made me stronger.  made me more confident.  made me into a better me.

so of course it makes sense that now i take her shopping to white house black market, and help her feel beautiful!  she never buys quality things for herself so it's about damn time!  i honestly cannot wait.  oh and the massages afterward?  yeah, that's gonna be nice too!

i'd also wish a happy mother's day to my dearest grandmothers - ema and nana.  here is a picture of my ema (mother's mother), momma, and i: taken when i was but a child, only 17, and on the day of my high school graduation.  we are all wearing purple to commemorate my college choice (it's my alma mater's school color), which also happens to be where my mother attended, and where my grandmother is an honorary alumnae.


and then me as a real child, with 5 generations of amazing mothers: my own, my father's mother, her mother, and HER mother!

i only hope that one day i can be HALF as great a mother as those in my family.

friday faves: 5.6.11

my weeks are always stressful, increasingly so. it's hard to keep my stress from seeping into this blog but i know it does - almost always on fridays as that's when i have to prepare for the true hurricane of stress: my store being open on the weekends (a.k.a. no sitting, no eating, no stop to the talking, no rest from the lecturing, virtually no sleep). this is a common fact amongst my friends. i've lost many of them due to my demanding work schedule and it has been difficult to justify this to myself. i just have to keep saying that while they are off having fun, they are likely racking up debt and struggling to stay afloat in this economy. i may not make a lot of money and i may not get a lot of sleep, but i am gaining incredible experience virtually unheard of from anyone my age (hellooo - CHINA?!). so it's worth it. it has to be worth it or else i'll lose my mind.

so what does this have anything to do with friday faves? it has to do with something that happened tuesday of this week. i spent my day off on monday in bed, flipping through bridal magazines (because really, i can't stop working even on days off) and feeling very lonely. i was also texting a long-time friend who is currently stationed in the army in north carolina. unlike my now-gone friends here, he has stayed there for me. he made me laugh, made me think, made me feel like things will get better. those were his words: things will get better. he promised that they would get better the very next day even! of course i laughed. but then i got to work on tuesday and an hour in, the ups guy arrived...


bright & happy tiger lillies in a lovely pink vase! they actually arrived still as buds - this picture was taken one day later when they really became to blossom and fill up the whole office with the most beautiful scent ever.

and he was right, it made my day better! it actually helped me through what ended up being a very difficult work day. funny how little things can make such a huge difference... but that's why i started this blog - to fill my daily life with the little pretty things we can too easily forget.

a personal post: photo challenge - 15

Day 15 - A picture of yourself and a family member

my last photo challenge post (yeah, 15 days is a whole lot more fun than 30!) and i wanted to make it a good one.  i brought a bunch of great pictures to work where i could use the good scanner and then share with you the my most beloved people in the whole world.  well... i forgot.  whoops.  my pic selection is super selective on my fancy new computer because of the aforementioned theft of my previous laptop, the one with all my photos and songs and documents... sigh.  but anyways!  my momma had sent me a few pics when i did my second photo challenge post, and i'd love to share another, slightly more recent pic, of us for my last post - it seems very fitting and a perfect conclusion to my little fifteen day personal experiment ~

i honestly love my madre.  love, love, LOVE.  so even though i wanted to post a bunch of pictures of a bunch of my lovely family members, it's fine that i only have my momma, because she is representative of them all: strong, intelligent, motivated, and compassionate.

a personal post: photo challenge - 14

Day 14 - a picture of something that has made a huge impact on your life recently

it's weird but...
magazines
especially ...

in order to stay "in" with what's going on with teenagers, i read all of the teen-targeted mags.  the others are a little more for me and my own interest in fashion.  and all of the pretty magazines give me inspiration for photo shoots, designing dresses, and even helping shoppers accessorize in the store.  there are stacks and stacks of new and old magazines pretty much everywhere i look - whether i'm in the office, at home, or even in my car!  not a day goes by without me scanning through at least one or two magazines.

note: this is just a small sampling of the mags i read.  like i said, i read all the teen ones, including anything that has to do with prom, pageant, or quinceañeras.  then there's the stack of bridal focused ones!  and last, many more "big kid" magazines than just vogue and marie claire.  wow this is pretty lame to admit.  then again, it's mostly for work -- even the subscriptions are paid for by my company! :)

a personal post: photo challenge - 13

Day 13 - a picture of your favorite band or artist
 florence welch, a.k.a. florence + the machine

maybe not "of all time," but certainly as of late.  especially as of tonight.  see, i've been at work all day and into the evening.  the only thing that kept me going (until nearly 11PM!!) was the soulful voice of florence welch.  every-single-song on lungs is a masterpiece.  i first fell in love with "kiss with a fist" but ever since i - almost immediately! - went out and got the full album, i have been unable to pick a favorite.

tonight, "the drumming song" was played most often.  it just boosted me through the fatigue and pain (if you've ever merchandised a store of over 5,000 square feet, you understand the physical pain it produces) unlike anything else could have.
  
{not to mention florence welch has about THE BEST fashion taste of any other artist!  i desperately want to see her live - when you watch videos of her singing she moves around and her voice in combo with the movement in combo with the couture makes for a simply unforgettable performance.  if she could be that good in a youtube video, imagine the experience of seeing her LIVE!}

a personal post: photo challenge - 12

Day 12 - A picture of somewhere you’d love to travel

herbshein, a little town in the bas-rhin area of france
seemingly random, but it's where my family is from and i'm a firm believer that if you don't know where you're from, you can't get where you're going.  my grandfather clearly agrees - he has spent decades writing extensively on our family's history.  i have the books on my shelf to prove it!  he has been to herbshein of course, but i have yet to even leave the country.
of course, if i were already in france, i'd have to hop on down to nice - i've always wanted to go see beautiful nice!
one day, one day . . .

but on a real note, i will be getting my first passport stamp one day veeeerrryyy soon - one day only 5 weeks from now actually!

where am i going, you ask?

HONG KONG, CHINA!

yes, it's a 17 hour flight and yes, it will be a very tiring work trip, but it's CHINA!  
my boss was teasing me that i've never left the country, not even canada or mexico, and on my first time out i'm going completely across the world!
but that's me - an all or nothing kind of gal.

5 weeks, the count down begins . . .

my mother tried to get me to read this book for years but i refused, assuming it would be a nicholas sparks-esque sappy read.  finally she guilted me into reading it by giving it to me as a sweet gift.  

so i read it.  and it was so beautiful that i immediately started reading it again.

read this book.  it just may change your outlook on life.  
or it may not.
either way, you'll love it.

a personal post: photo challenge - 10

Day 10 - a picture of something you wish you were better at

i have this awesome opportunity to design gowns but the problem is i'm terrible at sketching.  i'm able to get the general shape down in paper but i complete biff it when it comes to the intricate details.  i have all these incredible ideas and can't get over how lucky i am to get my designs actually made and *gasp!* sold to the public, but i can't freaking get them from my mind to the sketchbook!  there's a massive gap in my creative process and i'm starting to really regret never taking art classes in college... or high school for that matter.  in fact, the last time i sat in an art classroom was 6th grade.  art used to be my passion but then i switched it over to being "smart" and "academic" and all that.  art became frivolous in my mind.

and now i'm totally suffering because of it!

i have just a handful of weeks to somehow figure it out and find a way to show others all these dream dresses.  because if i can, they can become real!  seriously, i just can't get over how cool that is...

a personal post: photo challenge - 9

Day 09 - a picture of something you want to do before you die

 attend seminary
i know this is probably an unexpected answer, considering i work in fashion and all that, but my real passion is feminist theology.  i want to attend divinity school and earn an advanced degree, ideally a doctorate so i can hopefully one day teach at the collegiate level.  i have been through a long journey in my spiritual life but really found my niche in studying spirituality.  i realized that i feel closest to God when i am learning about the Divine.  i have what some "traditional" Christians may call a liberal theology, but really i feel that i am about as traditional as they come - I believe in one God, even though we each may call Him/Her something different.  
working in fashion has been really fun and i know i will continue to do it for a few years, but ultimately i need to fuel my real passion and hopefully pass on what i have learned to others.  i want to change lives the same way that my college chaplain and main religion professor changed mine.  they opened my eyes to a whole myriad of theories and writings i never knew existed, and encouraged me to question and explore and above all - read.  i love to read about different theologies!  due to the store i am unable to read very much but when i was nannying i was averaging one book a week, at the very least one every other week.  man oh man do i miss it. . .
so one day i will attend seminary.  it's just not the right time yet.

sorry for being overly personal, but i suppose that is the goal of these posts.  right?

i promise, i'll go back to just writing about pretty dresses and design and such soon enough :)

wow i am terrible at these "challenge" things!  the whole point of it being a "challenge" is to challenge you to stick to a schedule, do it every day, all that... and clearly that simple task is just too much for me!  sigh.  so without further ado, pictures 6, 7, & 8 ::

i'm off to scan through blogs by teen girls to see what's "in."  i also have a stack of teen magazines sitting next to me.

no, contrary to popular belief, i am not a teenager.
it's just my job to think like one.

a personal post: photo challenge - 5

Day 05 -  a picture of something you could never imagine your life without

does it make me a complete nerd to say that it's my computer?  because it absolutely is.
my old computer (also a mac) was rudely stolen from my own house nearly a year ago and i'm still recovering.  you don't realize how much something means until it's gone.  yes, i understand it's only a computer, and obviously i went out a couple months later and bought a new one.  but think about it... i lost ev-e-ry-thing.  past papers and senior theses i was proud of, thousands of songs i was in love with, and nearly as many photos i can never recover.  gone.  all of it completely gone.  i still get sad, and also incredibly mad, when i think about it.
so i'm going to stop!

i have a new pretty computer now and even though it lacks all the sentimental things i miss dearly, i have to admit it runs better!  i didn't think it would be worth it to upgrade to "pro" but lemme tell you this - it is!

anyways, back to the photo challenge prompt:  a picture of someone you could never imagine your life without
obviously my family and friends are much, muuuuuch more important than my computer.  but the prompt says "thing" not "person," so it doesn't make me a terrible person to say my computer.  right?!  and my computer is how i keep in touch with everyone, considering my lovely friends are currently spread out across the world and my work life makes it too busy to see anyone, even those nearby.  without my computer, how can i email?  how can i skype?!  i miss my friends and this lil laptop is the only thing that keeps me connected.  lame as it may be, no - i can't imagine my life without it.

p.s.  i completely blame my mother for this!  she is also attached to her laptop and i think she passed this off to me.  one of my fave things to do is just be with her - we put on tv (typically an all-day marathon of bones or svu, maybe even what not to wear) and plop down with our matching laptops and play text twist online.  sounds lame but is pretty much my fave thing to do at home, especially on a cold day with a fire going!  

p.p.s.  a note on this photo challenge:  i'm taking creative liberties with its prompts.  there are 31 and really they have started to seem the same over and over again.  also some aren't exactly things i feel are appropriate (example: "picture of person you love doing f***ed up things with" . . . um, no).  so, basically, i'm picking the "best" ones and cutting it down from a full month to a half month.  hope that's cool with you!

liz lemon may be hilarious but the real tina fey is a personal idol.  witty, intelligent, successful, and grounded - i would love to be in her shoes for a day!

 wait, who's that sexy brunette who's more interested in ketchup than getting her photo taken?

side note: i actually have many tv faves - but 30 rock is sort of my comfort blanket, always there for me when i need a pick me up, especially lately.  loooooove me some 30 rock!!
