Lynn Phegley Watches "Lost" - "Dumb Ending"

My mom's name is Lynn Phegley. She teaches music to elementary school kids in Grand Blanc, Michigan. She likes classic Hollywood musicals, trashy romance novels and "Sex In The City."

And for some reason she's seen damn near every episode of "Lost."

This week, our ongoing "discussion" comes to an end, and as one of several texts mom sent me during the finale declared it simply "dumb ending" (another said "I think it's Atlantis"), I bet you can guess what she thought. Though in a way, mother was strangely vindicated with the whole parallel reality thing.

Thanks one last time to this site for the screencaps.

Let's begin.

ON "WHAT THEY DIED FOR"

"I don't know what to think about 'Lost.' They're just going to kill everyone off until they solve their story. That's not a very good ending. 'Let's kill everyone off so Jack can guard the light!' Whatever that is. And I told you there is no such thing as a parallel universe! That's the problem with it. This is just someone's dream or nightmare. I don't know what. The whole thing is a nightmare!

"There was nothing really shocking this week except those idiots going into the closet. That was stupid! I thought there was a tunnel in there they were getting to. And Ben is just goes 'I've been waiting for you...blah blah blah...they're in my closet.' He's like a zombie."

[Me: "Well, he's been through a lot."]

"[Laughs] You're making excuses! He has no motivation. He's just a follower. A zombie. He's devoid of emotion."

[Me: "What about in the parallel reality where the French woman told him he was the only father Alex ever had and then he teared up? What was that?"]

"That was a weirdo-ism. It wouldn't be anything if you didn't know about the island, so that was nothing-ness. There's no connection. That's just to throw you off course. This reality has nothing to do with the island. They're not really trying to tell a story. What they're really trying to sell a TV show and keep everyone hooked. If there was a real ending, they'd have lost their audience long ago.

[Me: "That's unfair. If they were just out for money, they'd have run it over eight years right into the ground."]

"No. I think when they decided to only do so many seasons, they said, 'Let's make it as twisted as possible so that we can throw everybody off.'"

"With Jack, it was like Indiana Jones. You drink out of the goblet and you're all-knowing. And what happened to those temple people? They all got scattered! That's another weird thing. Maybe they killed them all off, though. But where'd Locke's people go. He must've smoked 'em. He smoked 'em!"

"I don't think anyone's going to live happily ever after. Here's my thing: they kill the Smoke Monster, and then they fix up the yellow houses. Then they have to get rid of Ben.

"And with Kate, they might as well kill her off so she can rest in peace. Maybe on Hurley will have a happy ending. And you think Sawyer and Juliet will meet in the parallel reality? That would be stupid!"

[Me: "What if they get to the end and Desmond gets them all together and goes, 'You've got to realize that none of this is real'? Would that make you happy?"]

"NO."

ON "THE END"

"Well, they were in Purgatory all along! Purgatory is limbo where you wait to get to heaven, and that's where they were. They didn't even know enough to wait."

"And I told you Jack didn't have a son! That was a stupid ending. And what was with that woman who was what's his name's mother? She knew where Desmond was going. Desmond was like that one character in...what's the movie about the angel in the body of the football player?"

[Me: "Warren Beatty. 'Heaven Can Wait.'"]

"Right! Desmond was like in 'Heaven Can Wait.' She wants to know if he'll take the son with him, and he says, 'Not tonight.' Do you think Ben knew they were in Purgatory? I don't think he knew. None of them were in the church. I think he's still living somewhere.

"They did have some snappy dialogue in there. There were like three lines that were unbelievably dumb. 'I've got a bad feeling about this.'"

"It was kind of predictable in a way. Even I predicted that Hurley was the all-knowing one. But Ben must have still been alive because he didn't go in. I think they all died and waited for Jack, and he died last. They just didn't age in heaven."

[Me: "I don't think so. I think the people on the plane made it out, and over the years the moment they each died was the moment before they woke up on that plane that landed."]

"I don't think so. In fact, I don't even know what you just said. Well, whatever. It was like a big love story at the end. All the couples got back together, which was weird too. They reached far for an ending. The whole thing was far-fetched! The good stories are about emotion."

[Me: "This story was brimming with emotion!"]

"That's what kept it from being dullsville."

[Me: "But that's the one thing you liked. And the fans online have been saying 'We want to know about Walt! We want answers!' But the creators said, 'People don't care about all that. They care about the characters.' So in the end, you were the winner, not the nerds."]

"Oh yeah, I feel like I'm a winner." [Sarcasm watch!]

"They dragged it out. It could have been two hours. And the worst commercial was the one for Target with the smoke detector. Did you see that? That was stupid."

"I feel disappointed. It was anti-climactic I guess I would say. When they were in that church, they should have had a ceremony or whatever. They should have walked through that door and came out on The Island in its restored splendor. That church should have been on The Island, and Hugo had built it. That's what was wrong with that. They should have said, 'Come on, Jack' and gone out the door to the little yellow houses where the water always runs. [Laughs]"

Lynn Phegley Watches "Lost" - 2 Down, 2 To Go

My mom's name is Lynn Phegley. She teaches music to elementary school kids in Grand Blanc, Michigan. She likes classic Hollywood musicals, trashy romance novels and "Sex In The City."

And for some reason she's seen damn near every episode of "Lost."

This week, our ongoing "discussion" again racks up multiple episodes in one all-fun go round covering the two episodes before the final two. Surprisingly, I think mom's kind of starting to enjoy this in the last few weeks leaving her with less to disparage against. Maybe. Sort of.

Thanks as always to this site for the screencaps.

Let's begin.

ON "THE CANDIDATE"

"That was melodramatic when Jin and Sun died, wasn't it? Oh my Gosh! So far fetched! And Sayid redeemed himself by blowing himself up. Yeah, right. This is getting too bizarre when they're killing everybody off. And stupid Claire! There she sits...'Where are you going?' 'To do what I started!' God, Claire is the most oblivious person on this show. She's crazy, and she thinks Locke is her friend. Bleh!

"If they all get killed, I'm going to say I wasted my time totally. I think I've wasted my time already, to tell the truth. But when the main characters are getting killed off, you know you're in trouble. But it was at least kind of interesting tonight. You did go, 'Oh my Gosh!' but it's not interesting enough to make you put down your game on your phone. I may have missed a couple of beats, but I can't give it my undivided attention. So it was interesting, but I thought if they kill everyone off, I'll be so mad. And Hurley cried when Jin and Sun were dead! That was dramatic.

"But with Jin and Sun, he should have been able to get her out of there. And she would have said, 'You better go to Los Angeles...our kid is there!' Any mother would have said that. Whoever wrote this story was not a mother."

"I don't see what the parallel reality has to do with anything."

[Me: "The theory is that the parallel reality is what would exist if the Smoke Monster gets off the Island."]

"I don't believe that. Who said that? Oh, the online people! I don't think they know much."

[Me: "Well, there are a few mysteries left to be solved here."]

"The two Jacobs or whoever they are...the good and evil people. Jesus and the Devil! We've got to know what's going on with them."

[Me: "And we've got to find out who Jack's wife is. Since we know he has a son, everyone is assuming the mother is Juliet."]

"What? Juliet?!? Why would the mother be Juliet? And we've got to know what ever happened to Desmond. There's a lot of unsolved people left out in the Boondocks...people that got buried alive and Juliet. I swore she was going to come back to life, but she was on another show! Maybe she'll show up on 'Dancing With The Stars.'"

[Me: "I still want Walt to show back up."]

"They had to get rid of all the kids because you couldn't drag all the kids along on a parallel reality. [Laughs] Kids need more attention than that. They got rid of every kid in the story!"

[Me: "Well, the story was only taking place over a few months, and the actor was growing at a faster rate so keeping him around wouldn't have made any sense."]

"Well, it doesn't make any sense anyway! How can he help it make any more sense when it doesn't make any sense in the first place? Anyone could tell you that. I think it's all a big hoax. They got everybody invested in watching this stupid story, and it didn't go anywhere."

ON "ACROSS THE SEA"

"If we're supposed to be in the Garden of Eden, I'm going to be mad."

[Me: "It's not the literal Garden of Eden."]

"I think it is. I think your wrong on that. That's what they're alluding to. And how come we never get to hear the Black Smoke one's name? I think it's because he's the devil. And why didn't Locke know what those skeletons were if he's the Smoke Monster?"

[Me: "That was a flashback to like season one or two."]

"That was a flashback?!? I never saw that! Oh good grief, who can remember Season 2. You nerds are the only ones who can remember that far back. That's been blotted from my memory. [Laughs] Oh my God! I do not recall that at all. How can you remember Season 2 if you can't remember the season you're in. I don't think the average Joe thinks about all these little threads."

[Me: "Think of it this way. If you read a novel and the first chapter has no impact on the end of the book, that wouldn't make any sense."]

"When I read a novel, I go forward and read the end and then go back and look for the significant parts."

[Me: "I don't think that's how the average Joe does it, Mother."]

"Oh, I think they do. That's the way I do it. If it gets too intense, I skip ahead because I like a happy ending. I don't think this is going to turn out that way. But I don't remember this flashback. I should consult with [my friend] Liz and [her daughter] Emma on 'Lost.' They're as perplexed as I am. I betcha they don't know about this stuff...I'll call you right back!"

[Mom hung up on me and called back ten minutes later.]

"Ah ha! Liz and Emma don't remember any of those flashbacks! I'm telling you, the average person doesn't remember this stuff."

"Here's what I think [about the Man in Black: if you die and then you can never leave, then everyone's going to be there in limbo forever: Jin and Sun and....oh, I got it! They're not in Heaven or Hell. They're in Purgatory!

[Me: "They're not in Purgatory. They've said that in the past

"Who said that in the past?"

[Me: "The creator of the show!"]

"Oh, I'm not going to trust him! I can't wait to hear the creator of the show after all this is over with."

[Me: "Oh, they've already announced they're not going to do any interviews on the show once it's done."]

"OH MY GOD! [Laughs] They're going to be like a famous author who doesn't give any interviews! Do they think they're J.S. Salinger or what? Who cares about two skeletons in a cave? All I know is that even though they're dead, they're all still floating around on The Island. That is the definition of Purgatory!"

Lynn Phegley Watches "Lost" - 3 Episode Extravaganza!!!

My mom's name is Lynn Phegley. She teaches music to elementary school kids in Grand Blanc, Michigan. She likes classic Hollywood musicals, trashy romance novels and "Sex In The City."

And for some reason she's seen damn near every episode of "Lost."

This week, our ongoing "discussion" is back with a special three-fer installment discussion the past few episodes that I've been unable to blog due to work and computer malfunctions (more on that tomorrow...I think). Surprisingly, I think mom's kind of starting to enjoy this in the last few weeks. Maybe. Sort of.

Thanks as always to this site for the screencaps.

Let's begin.

ON "HAPPILY EVER AFTER"

[Me: "So, now where we're at is that Desmond knows about the parallel universe."]

"No he does not! That's not what he knows. Anyway, I think he's just going along on the Island no matter what. 'OK, now this' and 'OK, now that.' That's a goofy idea you have. Desmond as the fixer? I don't think so. I think it's the physicist. 'The Physicist In The Library With The Candlestick!' That's what they did with this story. They played a game of Clue, and at the end they went 'Uhhhh...it was the candlestick.'"

[Me: "But now Desmond is going to go around in the Flash Sideways and get John Locke and Ben and Jack and whoever to remember The Island and get all back together."]

"That's what you think is going to happen? They already got everybody back together in another universe! That's no good. The flash world isn't real. Oh, good grief. I think you're insane. You haven't been right about anything this season. You didn't know they were in Hell!"

[Me: "They're not in Hell."]

"I'm in Hell! Watching this stupid show! All the people at school say, 'If we weren't invested in this, we'd quit watching.' This was so boring, I couldn't believe it. Sitting through this for an hour is like torture."

[Me: "How is this boring? We've got Charlie and Desmond who were once best friends and now are antagonizing each other and driving off a dock. We've got Eloise telling Desmond to leave well enough alone. Who knows why she knows everything."]

"It's because she's a mother. Mothers know everything."

ON "EVERYBODY LOVES HUGO"

"It's kind of unusual who's showing up from the past."

[Me: "Well, the fans have been asking for Libby for a while, but they said the actress wouldn't do it."]

"Hm. Well, it was kind of interesting tonight at least. I guess. I mean, he hit Locke with a car. That was strange. Did you get my text? Did you laugh or did you cry? I didn't think it was too exciting this week, but it was kind of interesting at least. Last week was kind of a bore. Tonight I liked better.

"But like I said, if this was a novel I would have skipped to the end and then go back to read it. I skip to the end, you know. But I guess it'll keep me here another week."

ON "THE LAST RECRUIT"

"I agree with Jimmy Kimmel. He said something like, 'I watched Lost...I don't know what really happened, but I watched it. I don't know what's going to happen to anybody, but I'm going to keep watching it.' That's exactly how I feel. I was up watching Jimmy because of Kate Gosselinwho got kicked off 'Dancing With The Stars.' That poor woman has no personality!

"That one thing at the end was right, Locke goes, 'You're with me now.' I think that what's his name, Sawyer, had it figured out, but then Jack went cuckoo bird and jumped off the boat."

[Me: "But Sawyer and all them got double-crossed!"]

"Those people are the pawns in the situations. There's the Widmore pawns and then there's Kate and Sawyer and the pilot. At least Jin and Sun got back together. And crazy Claire is with them! There's something bad going to happen there.

"I think with Sayid...well, whatever happened to Desmond. Did he kill him? Desmond asked 'What about the woman you love? What will she say?' and that was all they showed, right? I blinked off for a moment. I was playing solitaire on my iPhone.

"[This show now] it's interesting, except there's something about the sideways reality, too. Before we didn't notice, but it kind of had more of a timeframe. It's just like one week. Something was said about 'One week ago I was in Australia.' That's important somehow, but I have no idea what it's all supposed to mean."

Lynn Phegley Watches "Lost" - Intermission

Sorry, gang. With C2E2 and taxes coming up, I haven't had a minute to write up mom's thoughts on last week's episode, but I'll get you guys a double dose once this weekend's madness wraps. In the meantime, here's a text mom sent me earlier this evening.

"Update on Lost for tonight Liz asked me if Kate was going to get killed tonight. I said I dont think so but it's about Hurley. I said I think they're going to wait a few more weeks before they start killing people off. Then we realized she was talking about Kate Gosselin on Dancing w/The Stars! Such is my dual interests in life. I also have realized that the reason I find the story of lost so frustrating is that if it were a novel I would have skipped to the end by now! Talk to you soon."

Lynn Phegley Watches "Lost" - "The Package"

My mom's name is Lynn Phegley. She teaches music to elementary school kids in Grand Blanc, Michigan. She likes classic Hollywood musicals, trashy romance novels and "Sex In The City."

And for some reason she's seen damn near every episode of "Lost."

Each week of the series last season, I'm opening up the blog to mom to share her thoughts on what happened. I guarantee that those of you who like to read blogs digging in to the metaphorical underpinnings of the show looking for clues and analysis will almost certainly get nothing out of this. And thanks to this site for the screencaps.

Let's begin.

FLASH BORED-WAYS

"I didn't think Jin and Sun's story was that interesting. They're story is just starting at the end of this episode. How does she get well and stay pregnant and get where they're going? THAT'S what they should have showed. They didn't complete that story because that's what I wanted to know. I wanted to see if they get married and run away from her father after her father took all the money out of the bank. They didn't do much for their story tonight. The only thing they did was form an alliance in the real time of the Island. Jin and Jack are forming an alliance. 'Do you trust me?' I wouldn't trust anybody.

"I thought Sun didn't tell what's his name that he spoke English.

[Me: In the flash sideways, they're not married so she never had a reason to cheat on him and learn English.]

"Oh, for God's sake! Here I was thinking, 'He took it really well that she was pregnant after he shot her.'"

THERE'S A WAR COMING...EVENTUALLY

"What was new and exciting about this week? Nothing. The main villain talks to the Locke Monster. No surprise. I couldn't figure out goofy Claire. And now, the Locke Monster is playing all sides against the middle. And how does he know that they all have to be there to get off the Island?

"I was looking at them going, 'Oh now what? Jin who was a peasant fisherman is going to look at this map and become a scientist?' [Laughs] That Tina Fey woman is about as mean as they come, but she's just a flunky too. He tells her, 'Go get the package.'

"That was Desmond at the end? Where did they get him? So then what? I don't know. That 'V' show says, 'There's going to be a war!' and this show says the same thing. They're all doom and gloom shows. I don't care for doom or gloom.

"It's beyond me. I could have watched the 'American Idol' and have been just as happy. Or now I'm watching '16 And Pregnant.' I can watch stupid teenagers getting pregnant instead!"

Lynn Phegley Watches "Lost" - "Ab Aeterno"

HERE WE ARE IN PIRATE TIMES

"That was boring, actually. They were chained up in the pirate ship for way too long. They spend WAY too much time on that. Three minutes would have been enough. Then the benevolent Smoke Monster didn't kill him. Why didn't he kill him? I don't think the Smoke Monster had the authority to kill him because he wasn't really evil.

"If the end of it is 'Good and Evil,' that's just as bad as it being purgatory. You might as well have cowboys and Indians. But Good is supposed to win out, and there's not many redeeming qualities in this story.

"Most stories are like this: the people are what they are. The people may appear to be different to the other characters, but as a reader you always know who's good and who's evil. Then, when you get to the end it all wraps up neatly. This story does not do anything neatly. This is the kind of story where I would skip to the end to read.

"They're trying to show the ambiguity of the dystopia or whatever that article you sent me was about. Anyway. I don't believe in that. I believe in utopia. There's heroes and heroines. I like that better. I don't care for this kind of genre."

THE AGE OLD CONFLICT

"I don't remember the Man In Black being in this show before? Where was he?"

[I explain that MIB was most likely Jack's father in the earlier seasons.]

"How do we know that? I don't "infer." That's the problem with me and this story. There's too much inferment that has to go on. I go that he was the wife in that one scene, but it could be your imagination. I mean, there are a lot of things in this show that you have to double check with. I think half of the stuff is in those little pop up things, and you'd never have known it if you wouldn't have seen the pop ups.

"I said to a girl at work, 'Are you still watching Lost?' and she said, 'Yup. The only reason I'm still watching it is because I've invested all this time, and I want to see how it turns out.' Then I said, 'If it wasn't coming to an end, I'd have quite watching it.' It's true! And now they advertise, 'Watch this new show from the producers of Lost.' There's no way in hell I'd watch another show from them. I'd go, 'Oh, the producers of Lost? No thank you.'

"Is Jacob God? Because God gives free will. If this is supposed to be heaven or hell, then they're off track because these people have no free will."

[Me: Before Ben killed Jacob, Jacob told him he always has a choice.]

"Well, Ben said he didn't have a choice."

[Me: That's the whole question of the show then. Can anyone break the cycle? Some people have been broken by it like Claire or Sayid, but the main players still have a chance to change who they are if they want.]

"I don't know about that. They're not doing that good of choices in the sideways universe. Lordy. If this is all about good and evil, I can't wait until the religious people get to it. Maybe they're like that lady who wrote the vampire book. Maybe the person who writes 'Lost' is really a Utah Mormon. That'd be a thing to find out. If it's a religion story, I'm going to think it's dumb."

Lynn Phegley Watches "Lost" - "Recon"

My mom's name is Lynn Phegley. She teaches music to elementary school kids in Grand Blanc, Michigan. She likes classic Hollywood musicals, trashy romance novels and "Sex In The City."

And for some reason she's seen damn near every episode of "Lost."

Each week of the series last season, I'm opening up the blog to mom to share her thoughts on what happened. I guarantee that those of you who like to read blogs digging in to the metaphorical underpinnings of the show looking for clues and analysis will almost certainly get nothing out of this. And thanks to this site for the screencaps.

[Special note: Spoilers for tonight's episode are at the very bottom, so if you're Sean...don't read the last entry!!!]

Let's begin.

JIM FORD: ACE DETECTIVE!

"I was out looking for a magic wand at Target on Tuesday, so I missed the beginning. What happened?"

[I explain the con-to-cop setup with the briefcase of money.]

"I thought he was a con man. That's a little contradictory. Let's put it that way. This whole thing is contradictory from the way they set up his character to be a con artist, not to be a good guy. And now he's playing a con [on the island] because he's telling everybody what they want to hear no matter who he's talking to. He's telling Locke what he wants to hear and Widmore what he wants to hear and everybody. You can't really tell with him.

"You can't trust anyone on the show. That's where they're at."

"Wait, wait, wait...no we've got to keep track of the regular universe and the side universe?!?! Oh my God, that's too confusing. There's only one universe, I'm telling you. Ugh. Put that in your blog – UGH!"

THE WIDMORES

"Who was that girl? She looks like Tina Fey! I kept looking at her going, 'Who is that woman?!?' I couldn't figure out who I thought she looked like, and then I saw Tina Fey on TV, and I went 'Ah ha!'

"And it was funny when he goes, 'Take me to your leader!' [Laughs] Now, I thought that was comical. Every once in a while they have a line like that or that one time when the pilot was talking about the strangest funeral he'd ever been to. Now 'Take me to your leader!' It's like something out of a comic book! [Laughs]"

"And who are all those dead people on the airplane? That's the real problem with this is that they're introducing another third group of people, but it's kind of late in the game to introduce a whole 'nother group. Is that how they're going to solve their problem."

MEANWHILE, BACK AT THE CAMP

"Man, what's his name slapped [Claire] upside the head, huh? [Laughs] First she's like, 'Here's my friend' and now he's just slapping her upside the head. I don't think he's much of a friend!

[Me: What did you make of his whole "I had a mother who was crazy" speech?]

"That was probably the only interesting thing that happened because it's going to reveal something about the creature. How can Locke though be buried on the beech and be walking around? It seems like [the man in black] would have to inhabit his body.

"Oh! And that was the other interesting thing. 'They're putting up those pylons to keep the smoke monster out!' [Laughs] That was another funny thing. Who knew the pylons were to keep out the smoke creature, did you? I'd have never thought of that."

NEXT TIME ON LOST...SPOILERS!

"Oh, and next time we're talking about the guy who never ages."

[Me: We're going to pirate times!]

"You think so? That'll be interesting. They better get Johnny Depp in there. He's more of a crazy pirate than any of those kooky people. It ought to be interesting if I can remember to watch it."

Lynn Phegley Watches "Lost" - "Dr. Linus"

COMPARING THIS WEEK WITH LAST WEEK

[Me: Last week you said Sayid was always a killer. This week, we get a similar choice for Ben, and he choses to be good. Has Ben always been a killer?]

"YES."

[Me: But then why was he able to give up power to let the girl get her recommendation letter? Is it because he knew from the island that it was up to him to save her?]

"Well, if they're in parallel universes, they don't know what the other one has realized."

[Me: There are some connections they don't comprehend like with Jack's surgery scar.]

"[Laughs] Well, no one could comprehend this because it's stupid. It's far too complex to be comprehended. I think Ben is having a temporary change of heart because he's an outcast. He's got no one to go with. Nobody wants him. They're all castaways in some form. They're social castaways. That's why they're stuck in this parallel universe. Because none of them can relate to other people.

"What you're seeing of the character of Ben is him in his most hyper-nerdiness. You see Jack as a great, wonderful doctor though he's not that wonderful all the time, either. You see them in their hyper-characterization. But the purest form of Hurley is on the island.

"But no one trusts Ben. He made his bed and now he has to lie in it.

"I couldn't tell you who's going to get redeemed. Who could tell you that? Sayid was always evil, but he was sympathetic as a torturer. But at heart, he could do anything that anybody needed him to do. So could Ben, though. Ben might be having second thoughts now that what's his name is saying there's going to be this big war. 'Come on to the other island.'

"But there's people with Ghost Locke who might not want to be there."

ON THEM GETTING BACK TO NIKKI AND PALO

"[Laughter] I saw Miles there with the diamonds, but I didn't realize he'd dug them up. How do you know that?!? That wasn't told in the story. You just assumed it. That's what's wrong with this story. You can't just assume stuff in a story."

[Me: Yes, you can! There are plenty of ways to imply that action has happened without showing it. He heard their thoughts from their deaths with his powers then dug up the diamonds.]

"Well, they didn't imply that very well! They didn't show anything. They just showed him looking at the diamonds.

"So what do you think they'll imply next? Do you think we're going to flash to pirate times [for Richard]? I'd like to see that!"

WHO'S GOOD Vs. WHO's EVIL

"Jack has not changed. He's just on to the game. He's knows he's invincible or something. That's why he wouldn't get blown up.

"How would I know what Jack thinks? The only person who you know what they think is Hurley. He tells what he's thinking. I'm telling you, Hurley still has good intuition. 'You better not do that, dude...blah blah blah...we better get out of here, man.' At the end of the story, he'll be the smartest one on there.

"I get the whole good vs. evil thing, but I don't care about all that. I just want to get to the end of this damn story. I'm starting to feel like not watching it, I'm telling you.

"I don't like mysteries. I just want to know the ending. And it said on the TV description 'Ben deals with a lie.' What lie did he deal with?"

[Me: He lied about killing Jacob.]

"Oh, well. The only fun thing that happened tonight was when they all met on the beach. It was like a soap opera or something. Like a romance movie. Here comes Hurley in slow motion! It was like Bo Dereck in '10!'"

WHAT ABOUT JACOB?

"That's the real thing. Whoever Jacob is, it doesn't matter. That's what's wrong with this story. I don't know who Jacob is, and I don't care. He's only been in it for two episodes. They only ever talk about Jacob, but you never see who he is. Who cares? He's just glimpsed. He's a character who's never been seen or heard from."

I JUST WANTED TO INCLUDE THIS LAST BIT

"I saw 'Alice in Wonderland' this week. I'm tired of these movies with the animation. It's like 'Star Wars' where the cards are fighting – the queens have these soldiers that are like playing cards, you know? And when they have a little battle and this scene that's all animated where there's a billion soldiers that all look the same. That is getting dull.

"I said, 'I wonder what the next thing in animation is?' and Liz said, 'I think it's "Avatar."' And I said, 'Oh God, I hope not. That looks too bizarre to me.' I don't like 3D either. It makes me seasick."

Lynn Phegley Watches "Lost" - "Sundown"

BAD SAYID

"Now Sayid's going over to the dark side? He was always on the dark side. He's a killer in all of his lives. These people are self-preservationists. He's always been a killer, and Kate would do anything to preserve herself, you know? She killed her father or whatever.

"Ben he realized Sayid was over on the dark side, so he skipped town.

"I thought the only surprising thing was when Sayid went, 'Oh, I made a similar bargain.' And he says, 'Are you go to go, or are you going to stay?' and Sayid goes, 'I think I'm going to stay' and then he drowns the guy!

"But the end was dumb. And how did that one girl know where to put her hand in the bricks?"

BIG QUESTIONS

"What was Jim doing in the freezer?

"And what is it they say at the end of every episode: "answers will be given!" HA! It's not coming together. You're crazy if you think it's coming together. [My best friend] Liz goes, 'What a waste' at the end of the hour. I go, 'Amen!' She says, 'How many hours have you wasted on this show already?' and I go, 'Too many!' We've wasted all of our hours, really.

"They don't know where they're story is going, so they're going through growing pains. Somebody goes, 'Oh, wouldn't it be cool if we did this?' And then someone else goes, 'Oh! And then it will be cool if we do this! And then...we'll figure a way to tie it all back together.' They don't have a clue.

"I want to know what happened to those two people they buried alive way back at the beginning. Whoever they were. I always figured that was something they never resolved.

"If they were still on Wednesdays, I'd have given up by now because I go to visit Aunt Dorothy then."

Lynn Phegley Watches "Lost" - "Lighthouse"

THE PART OF THE EPISODE SHE LIKED BEST

"Claire was taken over by the Smoke Monster and Sayid will be too, so it will be those three against Jack. Don't you think? Something like that. It's very stupid now. Claire has gone kooky, and how can Jin now realize who all the kooky people are?

[If I was with somebody who was putting an axe in a guy's chest, I'd lie to them too.]

"That's a little hard to swallow! It's too implausible of a story, that's what's wrong. This story isn't fun. Do you think this is fun?

"Claire's been in the woods for three years? She never would have survived."

[Me: "Well, the Smoke Monster taught her up some survival skills."]

"Oh yeah, right! Her friend. [Laughs] It just gets dumber by the minute. This is not wrapping up. How many more episodes do we have to watch? Nine or ten?!?!? Lord have mercy. 'Big Love' only has two episodes left. On that, they chopped a guy's arm off. That was kind of shocking. You talk about an axe to the chest...it's all the same thing. It's just there for shock value, see? Put that on your blog: on 'Big Love' they chopped off a guy's arm, and on 'Lost' they chopped a guy with an axe. Same difference.

"And if John's there, where is Sawyer?"

THE AUDIENCE IDENTIFICATION CHARACTER

"I love Hurley. 'Why haven't we seen this lighthouse?' 'Well, maybe we weren't looking for it before!' God, there were some dumb lines in this episode. 'You've got ink on your forehead!'

"And that lighthouse wheel...is that connected to the big wheel down in the cave? It must be.

"Hurley's going to quit being used for a while because Jacob said to him, 'Sometimes you just have to get into the back of a car and they do what you want, and sometimes they have to stare out into the ocean.' That was stupid. It's all about trust....and stupidity. It's all about who trusts who and who is stupid."

THE EXCHANGE THAT BEST EXEMPLIFIES MOTHER AND I'S WEEKLY CALLS

"The kid with the piano. What was that about? Did you see the goatee man was this with his own kid. Jack's going to remember his parallel life, and then he going to realize all those people are intermingled."

[Me: Well, did you feel anything for the characters? Did you have some sympathy for Jack?]

"I felt nothing. No, I don't have any sympathy for Jack. I just thought, 'Well, this is a dumb part of the story that you never heard of before. Here we've been through five seasons, and we never knew he had a child.' "

[Me: I'm telling you...this is an alternate reality where Jack has a son even though he never did before.]

"No, that is not true! No no no!"

[Me: Yes it is! When he's on the island, he even says to Hurley that he'd make a terrible father. He has no son on the island.]

"Yes he does, dummy! I don't believe in that concept. No no. No. I don't believe that concept. If you ever write a story like that, nobody will buy it."

[Me: Except for ABC who would run it for six years and win multiple Emmys with it.]

"On Big Love, they all have three wives and they chopped a man's arm off. It's the same story. Perception is reality. Remember that."

Lynn Phegley Watches "Lost" - "The Substitute"

APPARENTLY, MOTHER HAS NEVER SEEN "SLIDERS"

"I still don't believe in parallel universes. I never read a book about that. Name one book you've read about that, Mr. Science Fiction 101.

[I cite the works of Michael Moorcock and try to briefly explain the DC Comics multiverse.]

"DC Comics isn't a novel! Bullshit. Your brother says Slaughterhouse 5. I don't believe in parallel universes!

"In this book I was reading, I have to tell you how they solved their time traveling dilemmas. This woman time travels in Scotland through one of those stone formations like Stonehenge or something. She goes through the stones and ends up in 1740 or something. She's there all through the book. She never gets back to modern times. She just stayed there. Then at the end of the book in the last chapter, she ends up at this monastery – and she's been through all these horrible things, you know – and she's like...should she change the future and tell people these wars are coming and blah blah. So she finally confesses this to a priest that she's from the future and all these things, and he just accepts it all and goes, 'It's like a miracle that you're here in the past. And if you love your husband now, you should just stay with him.' The end.

[Me: And that was the end of the book?]

"Yeah. She just stayed where she was in the past. This is the Outlander series by Diana Gabaldon. It's a whole big series of seven books, and this is the first one. She just confessed to the priest, and he was a person who could accept it. Because the Catholic Church was always known for being open-minded in the 1740s. Right. He just thought it was a miracle.

"So maybe they'll all confess to a Catholic Priest on 'Lost' and it'll all end up OK. Do you think?"

MEANWHILE, IN...UM...NOT A PARALLEL TIMELINE

"There's Hugo...that was hilarious. That was the hilarious part of the show. 'Oh, I'm sorry I parked in your way. I own the company. Let me get you a job.' And Locke with the girl asking what kind of animal he would be. I think you always read more into this. I think the interesting part was that Hugo was like this kind and wonderful dude. There goes Hugo again being more perceptive than the average bear.

"And that whole thing with Ben in there complaining about the coffee pot was stupid. I thought, 'Oh my God, here we go!'"

ZOMBIE THEORIES

"Sawyer is not going to get off the island because he's going to want to be there when Juliet wakes up from the dead. He might not care if Locke is dead, but he'll care if Juliet's waking up. He might now know that, but we know it as the viewer. So he'll figure it out once Locke does something to him. Not real Locke. Real Locke'll come back to life...and they didn't even put a cloth over his face when they buried him! They just threw some dirt on him. Huh?

"And that strange little cemetery there...everyone in that cemetery is going to pop back up. Why don't they just bury him on the beach? Why did they lug him to the cemetery? That was great though when they buried Locke, and she asks 'Did anybody know him?' And Ben goes 'He was a good person. I'm sorry I killed him.' Then the one guy goes, 'This is the weirdest funeral I've ever been to.' [Breaks up in Laughter] The pilot. He's kind of hilarious. He's just the innocent bystander watching the wreckage go by. Didn't you think it was funny? I don't think they probably meant it to be that funny, but it was.

"Who was that little blonde boy? He goes, 'I know you can't kill Jacob.' And then that girl gathered up his ashes. He's probably going to come back to life too."

THE MONSTER, THE NUMBERS, ETC.

"He's lying to Sawyer. He's a mast manipulator, the Smoke Monster. I don't believe anything he says. Do you? You'd be falling down on the island then because you'd believe that. Sawyer doesn't believe it. He's just going there because he wants to get off.

"And Sawyer should have realized that [the numbers on the wall were 'The Numbers'] because he was down there punching the Numbers in."

THE FUTURE!

"I want to know when Juliet is going to pop back to life. None of those [big mysteries] are interesting to me. JAck is the most interesting one because he's most clueless. The rest of them kind of have a clue. Hurley is always perceptive. Sawyer can see that's not Locke. Kate can always find water. But Jack, he doesn't get it. The only thing he knew was that that one pill was poison.

"And you know, I don't watch this every week, but I do like those little pop up things they play on the repeat. But I'm not going to watch that whole thing again for another hour. I've given this enough hours!"

Lynn Phegley Watches "Lost" - "What Kate Does"

A NOTE ON LAST WEEK'S EPISODE

"I turned on the repeat of last week for a minute, and they had those pop up things. Did you know that foot has a name? It's called a minaret or something. I don't know. In the minaret, parapet, whatawhet....whatever. But who knew that thing had a name?"

THIS WEEK'S EPISODE

"It was dullsville this week. DULLS. VILLE. It goes from stupidity to dullsville. What was the point of this week?

"This moved WAY too slow. It just seemed to move at a snail's pace. I could have fallen asleep two or three or four times. The only thing interesting was at the very end when Claire came back as a zombie or whatever she is...it was like 'The Walking Dead.'" [NOTE: She's not referencing the comics, nerds. She just means zombies.]

"That's what's wrong with this story. They're up and down and up and down. They can't maintain a level of interest."

WHY JACK DOESN'T ASK ANY OBVIOUS QUESTIONS ABOUT WHAT'S GOING ON

"It's because Jack knows the answers because he is already simpatico with every person he meets. Like, he knows that guy is not telling the truth, and he knows that the pill is something he should not give Sayid. He sees through their facade or whatever...I don't know. I mean, he just said to those guys at the swimming pool, 'Stand aside' or whatever, and they let him go through to the leader.

"He's not a very good leader because he can't figure shit out!"

WHAT SHE KNOWS ABOUT KATE, SAWYER AND SAYID

"Kate and Sawyer are sitting there, and he's not talking to her I guess. But isn't it convenient that the water hose still works? Now she can fill up her canteen. But here's what I thought: I thought Sawyer was going to go down in that little hole and turn that wheel again. Who knows that's down there? Somebody knows where that bookshelf is. Somebody knows how to return the universe.

"Kate only does what Kate needs for herself. She's a self-centered character. See with Sawyer, now he's in love. And why does she cry when he says "I was going to ask her to marry me?" Like he was in a romance novel. And then she cried. Who does she love...does she love Jack, or does she love Sawyer? Or both of them?

"Sayid always was evil. He was evil, and then he became good. He's a character that will do what needs to be done, no matter what it is. He has no inner voice."

ON WHAT WE LEARNED THIS WEEK

"Tonight was just too...what happened tonight? Nothing happened. The blonde is back. That's it. At the end of the story Claire is back. But that wasn't too surprising because everyone's popping back to life. They're all going to pop back to life and have a hoe down or something. A birthday party. A reunion. That's what my prediction is: at the end, they're going to all get together 20 years later and have a class reunion in those little yellow houses."

Lynn Phegley Watches "Lost" - "LA X"

My mom's name is Lynn Phegley. She teaches music to elementary school kids in Grand Blanc, Michigan. She likes classic Hollywood musicals, trashy romance novels and "Sex In The City."

And for some reason she's seen damn near every episode of "Lost."

I'm not sure how to account for this. I know she started watching it with me at the pilot, but her following the show has taken on a life of its own even though since day one, she's made a point of calling me up after every new episode to tell me how dumb she thought it was. This has been going on for six years, and was a favorite past time of Ben and I's when we shared an office at Wizard. So, I figured this being the last season, I'd open up and share mom's thoughts on the series twists and turns with all of you.

I don't know if we'll do this every week because sometimes it gets a bit repetitive, but if anyone has any questions they'd like me to ask mom about her dedication to the show or what she thinks of any of the characters/plotlines, please let me know.

Also: I guarantee that those of you who like to read blogs digging in to the metaphorical underpinnings of the show looking for clues and analysis will almost certainly get nothing out of this. And thanks to this site for the screencaps.

Let's begin.

DEAD PEOPLE

"I didn't think they were going to stay dead. I think Juliet is coming back to life...unless they all have another job somewhere. That's the only way you could track it."

[I point out she's in that "V" remake.]

"In that what remake? Oh. That dumb show.

"I was about to call you and go, 'Who do you think is going to pop back to life?' and then there went Sayid. It was dumb. 'What happened?' No one knows. And they're on the plane, and they don't know each other again. And the father's body is stuck on the island somewhere. You got me. There's something wrong with this whole story. I like a story that wraps up neatly."

THE SMOKE MONSTER

"I kept thinking, 'Locke is going to pop back to life.' They're trying to say he was a tragedy, but I don't believe that either. Whoever this Smoke Monster is...they send signals to let them know they should be worried, and then they don't kill him!

"And why was [Richard] in chains? How does that work? So did he kill him or just knock him out? He just picked him up and carried him off the beach. That didn't make sense."

THE AUDIENCE IDENTIFICATION CHARACTER

"How does Hurley get to be so smart when he used to be so dumb? He always figures it out and goes, 'Dude, you can speak English because you're not asking him to translate my answer.' So how did he get so persistent all of the sudden?"

PARALLEL REALITIES

"That would be dumb. Their universe just hasn't lined up yet is what happened. They can't stay like they are for very long. It's too strange for fiction. I don't get science fiction, I guess. That other book [The Hunger Games] was dumb too."

WHAT MYSTERY DOES MOM WANT SOLVED?

"I can't even tell you. I don't know. It's stupid. I want them to get back in the time warp or something. Get them all in the same time and space because I don't really go for this time traveling. I don't really like that. But I don't think that's the whole premise of the show. 'Time Traveling.' Do you?"
